Washington Meets with Gay Leaders


Disgraced Grey's Anatomy star Isaiah Washington met with leaders of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) yesterday to address his recent homophobic remarks. In a statement last week, Washington declared he needed help after lying about using the word "f****t" to describe gay cast mate TR Knight. He also agreed to meet with GLAAD leaders, who had requested the chance to sit and talk with the actor in a statement they released last week. That meeting took place yesterday, shortly after Washington fired his longtime publicist. GLAAD officials were upset when the actor insisted he "did not call TR a f****t" during a Grey's Anatomy press conference backstage at the Golden Globe Awards last week. Knight went public two days later, revealing his co-star had called him a "f****t" during a heated row with cast mate Patrick Dempsey last October.

Naja, dann denke ich, dass die Autoren ihn nicht einfach nicht mehr erwähnen werden, sondern ihm einen guten Grund schreiben werden, warum er nicht mehr auftaucht.

Nee, das hab ich auch nicht gemeint. Nur ist es schon schwierig, wenn ein Charaktere von einer Folge auf die nächste plötzlich nicht mehr auftaucht. Dass sie das gut erklären werden, dass er weg ist, glaub ich schon. Aber ich meinte, dass es den Autoren nur unnötig schwer gemacht wird, wenn sie nicht die Möglichkeit bekommen, ihn innerhalb einer Folge zu verabschieden, in der er noch mitspielt. Es kommt ja auch drauf an, wie die letzte Folge, in der er mitspielte, eben endete. Mir wäre es lieber, er würde dann noch in einer Folge mitspielen, in der dann ein guter Grund gefunden wird, warum er nun gehen muss und tschüss... Naja, ich bin mal gespannt. Die werden das schon irgendwie hinkriegen, außerdem ist die Entscheidung ja noch längst nicht gefallen und nur weil es bei Kristin von EOnline steht, muss es ja noch lange nicht genauso eintreten...

@3.Staffel Ich finde es total cool das die 3 Staffel gleich im anschluss kommt obwohl es mir lieber wäre wenn es 21.15Uhr kommen würde aber ich gucks trotzdem, obwohl ich dann am nächsten Morgen in der schule immer sehr müde bin, aber wenn es um GA geht dann nehm ich das natürlich auf mich.

@Burke Ich finds zwar auch scheiße was Washington geleistet hat aber man kann doch auch nicht einfach eine HAUPTFIGUR einfach so rauswerfen. Aber wenn er rausgeworfen wird dann muss es wenigstens eine Abschiedsfolge geben, ich meine wenn er von einer folge zur anderen nicht mehr da ist da ist das doch auch scheiße. Und was wird eigentlich aus Christina?
Also irgendwie find es scheiße, aber er gehört halt zu Greys Anatomy. Das wär genau so wie als ob Patrick Dempsey oder Ellen Pompeo nicht mehr dabei wären.
Ist schon komisch das ich ihn verteidige obwohl ich der totale Derek-Meredith-Fan bin!

Ob sie da wohl auch wieder eine Sommerpause machen? So wie damals bei der ersten Staffel von Lost und Desperate Housewives (und auch Grey's Anatomy - aber die hatte ja sowieso nur 9 Folgen).

Ich werd' mal beim ORF nachfragen, wie's dort aussieht. Die werden aber sicherlich noch die erste Staffel von "The Closer" fertig zeigen, die zur Zeit auf dem GA-Sendeplatz am Montag läuft.

Als ich grade eben gelesen hab, dass sie die 3 Staffel gleich im Anschluss senden hab ich erstmal vor Freude geschrien^^ Sogar meine Mama im Zimmer nebenan ist wach geworden ^^
Eigentlich dacht ich ja, sie machen wieder ne Pause wie zwischen Staffel 1 und 2. Aber das ist natürlich viel besser

Ich persönlich bin ja auch ein Fan der Sommerpause geworden, obwohl das für mich jetzt toll ist. Wenn ich im Sommer zuhause bin kann ich 2 Monate lang GA sehen.

Wegen Burke, währe mal interessant, wenn er von jetzt auf gleich verschwindet, glaube aber eher das es nicht geschehen wird. Trotzdem bleibt abzuwarten.

Aber letztlich dauert es dann noch länger bis sie die 4 Season zeigen (wenn es denn eine 4 Season gibt...wovon man allerdings bei der Einschaltquote in den USA sehr ausgehen kann.)

What Rhimes didn't mention, was whether Washington would be fired or not. TMZ spies in high places in the production of "Grey's Anatomy" say Washington's fate will be determined by ratings, not moral outrage -- namely, whether his presence helps or hurts the show.

He's in therapy for his use of an anti-gay slur against a castmate.

"With the support of my family and friends, I have begun counseling. I regard this as a necessary step toward understanding why I did what I did and making sure it never happens again," Washington said in a statement Wednesday. "I appreciate the fact that I have been given this opportunity and I remain committed to transforming my negative actions into positive results, personally and professionally."

Washington took a break from filming Tuesday to meet with gay rights activists and offer help in educating the public about the cruelty of such words, an offer the activists called sincere.

Whether Washington was receiving outpatient counseling or had entered a facility was not specified, and the statement did not indicate whether he would miss work on the show.

Washington's publicist, Kelly Mullens, declined to comment further. A call to ABC about the effect on production of the hit TV show was not immediately returned Wednesday.

Series creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes issued her own statement, at once criticizing

Washington for his use of the word "faggot" about co-star T.R. Knight and lauding Washington's decision to seek help.

"I speak for all the executive producers here at 'Grey's Anatomy' when I say that Isaiah Washington's use of such a disturbing word was a shocking and dismaying event that insulted not only gays and lesbians everywhere, but anyone who has ever struggled for respect in a world that is not always accepting of difference," Rhimes said.

She said she's been working within "the 'Grey's family" and with ABC and the Touchstone Television studio to address the issue "in a way that underscores the gravity of the situation while giving us all a foundation for healing."

"We applaud and encourage Isaiah's realization that he needs help and his subsequent choice to seek immediate treatment for his behavioral issues," Rhimes said.

She expressed appreciation to fans during this "stressful time" and said those involved with the show would continue to "make the best television we can."

It was during an on-set quarrel last October with co-star Patrick Dempsey that Washington reportedly used the slur about Knight, who was not present. Although Washington apologized publicly at the time, the issue boiled up again at the Jan. 15 Golden Globes when he denied using the epithet.

After being criticized last week by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and ABC, Washington issued an apology.

He met Tuesday with the heads of GLAAD and Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, who said Washington agreed to efforts to fight bias but that no specifics were reached.

ABC and Touchstone Television are owned by Walt Disney Co.

hm vielleicht versuchen sie doch grass drüber wachsen zu lassen. trotzdem merkt man shondas statement an das sie mehr als sauer ist, doch scheint eine entscheidung bezüglich einer entlassung von IW noch nicht gefallen zu sein. mal sehen wie das drama ausgeht, ich bin halt der meinung das der image schaden für GA immer größer wird je länger sie IW an bord lassen. mir ist es wirklich ein rätsel wieso er noch da ist
ich habe in einem anderen forum von einem user folgendes gelesen

It brings a tear to my eye to just read these types of statements to see how (finally) being gay is accepted so openly and his rights are fought for in the workplace!

all i can say is - look at the reaction to TR now...and compare with the reaction to Ellen 10 years ago.

genauso sehe ich das auch, vor 10 jahren hätte sich ABC garantiert nicht für TR eigesetzt und IW vorwürfe gemacht. in deutschland ist das wieder eine andere sache, hier wäre das ganze erst gar nicht so groß geworden, den es interessiert hier nicht wirklich ob ein schauspieler nun schwul ist oder nicht. die hauptsache ist doch das er seinen job gut macht und nicht wen er liebt.
